Here is a short, simple explanation of enduro timekeeping. This was taken from a thread on

Don't let the time keeping prevent you from riding an ENDURO!
Enduro Time Keeping/ Brand X rules----Easy!
The main reason that most Enduro’s are Brand X instead of AMA is that it makes sure everyone gets the same rest period at a “RESET” and Gas Stop .In AMA rules, you simply follow all the times on the route sheet.
When you show up to a race., Go thru Tech inspection (sound test, license, reg.)
When you sign up, you'll get a row(START) number (for example "9A") that you'll tape to your head light and left side of your helmet
You'll also get a score card that you'll tape to your front fender and a route sheet with
Milage Direction Time notations
0.0 S TR 9:00
When you see a RESET on the route sheet. Look at the time difference and that’s about how long you should wait. For example;
RESET
3.0 TAR 9:07:30
TO
4.0 TAR 9:10:00
Your wait period is 2minutes and 30 seconds
To be exact in BRAND X rules use the following;
OPTION 1
STEP 1: SET YOUR WATCH EXACTLY TO the KEY TIME WATCH located near sign up
STEP 2; ADD YOUR ROW NUMBER TO THE TIME ON THE ROUTE SHEET ( for example: your number is 9A, add 9 to the time and you will be starting at 9:09am
STEP 3: EVERY TIME THAT YOU GO THRU A CHECK, JUST ADD THE LAST ENTERED NUMBER ON YOUR SCORE CARD TO THE TIME ON THE ROUTE SHEET
OPTION 2
STEP 1: Subtract your row number from the KEY TIME watch at sign up
(ex. the time is 7:35am subtract "9" = 7:26am) then zero the seconds
Then you'll start when your watch says 9:00 (it'll actually be 9:09)
STEP 2: Subtract your row number from the last score on your score card (minutes that you’re late by) If 9 is entered, then you zeroed that check
(ex. after entering a check, they mark 15 on your score card. 15 minus 9 =6 minutes late)
STEP 3: Add the minutes you’re late by to the time on your route sheet
(ex. your route says 10.00(miles) R TR (right trail) 9:25:00am, you take the R TR
at 9:31:00am 9:25:00 plus 6= 9:31:00
You’ve come to another check and they put down “22”. You’re now late by 13 minutes. (22 minus 9 = 13). Add 13 minutes to your route sheet time. Etc., etc.
Other Rules: When you get to a KNOWN CONTROL, typically after a GAS STOP, you can pick any number between your ROW(start) number and the last score on your score card.
If you're early to a check, it'll cost you 2 points for the 1st minute, then 5 points for each additional minute.
Don't be early!
If you get to a check and your score is 61 more than your row number, you will only be scored up to the previous check. You're all done. You've Houred Out. To help prevent this, get back to your row number at a KNOWN CONTROL
“FREE TERRITORY” means that there are no check points on that section.
